Netbook of a different flavor can do more

Gateway has expanded its Lt Series with a netbook that features a processor of a different flavor.

The new cherry red finish Gateway LT3114u is an 11.6 inch, display netnook powered by, not an Intel Atom processor, but an AMD Athlon 64 L110 single core processor (Clocked at 1.2 GHz, with 800 Mhz FSB and 512 KB L2 cache.

Aside from having an AMD processor, the LT3114u features an ATI Radeon X1270 graphics (with dedicated 384 MB) coupled with an ATI RS690 chipset. It also runs on storage and memory hungry Windows Vista.

These configurations indicate that this PC can do more than basic computing and Internet browsing and thus, it doesn’t technically fall under the category of a netbook, which is a scaled down Pc stripped of a lot features.

The LT3114u may only fall under the category of netbooks when one considers the price P26,000

A nice feature it shares with a full featured notebook is the Hd quality widescreen display, The screen is a high definition WXGA Ultrabite Led-backlit display capable of 1366 x 768 resolution at 16.9 aspect radio. This means that even though the screen is small, you can still enjoy watching movies or playing games at high resolution.

Positioned as a netbook that can do multi media and entertainment processes, the Lt3114u comes preinstalled with games and free trial online games.

In fact, you can even install video editing software like the Roxio Wave and edit your home videos. This netbook is very responsive in rendering and editing videos and its performance on saving the videos to different formats and storages is also commendable.

For a netbook, it surprisingly can do more demanding processes, which we expect from an entry-level full featured notebook.

In the looks department, the Lt3114u boasts of a smooth shiny red top accentuated by chrome lines. From a far, it does look like a red clutch bag with a chrome latch. The widescreen display is framed by a black shiny finish and the black keyboard (featuring chiclet keys) is framed by a textured maroon palm rest.

The Lt3114u is likewise thin and light, weighing in at only 3.04 lb and measuring 1.03 inches thick. It has a lot of storage at 250 Gb. It has Wifi, three USB ports, VGA, multicard reader, high definition audio support, a mic, audio out and a 0.3 Mp webcam.

Another plus is its six-cell lithium ion battery, which can offer up to five hours of battery life and more if you put the netbook on battery saving mode.

Business Phone with dual personalities

Building on the success of E71, Nokia comes up with another smart business phone boasting innovative design and enhanced performance. Would the E75 live up to market expectations?

At 11.18 long, 5cm wide and 1.44 cm thick, the E75 would have easily passed off as candy bar.

But there’s more to the E75, Flick it sideways and it extend 3 cm more, revealing a full qwerty keypad.

At this point, the E75 takes on a different personality. The hidden qwerty keypad has well spaced- albeit flat keys- that favor Web surfers or text message and e-mail obsessed users.

The phone’s 2.4 inch screen (320 x 240 pixels) also reorients itself automatically into landscape mode.

Business Oriented

Since the E75 is business-oriented, one could find on the menu a whole office folder that contains a calculator, active notes, dictionary, file manager, Internet, converter, Zip manager, Adobe PDF and Quickoffice, which allows one to read and edit word, excel and Powerpoint files.

The E75’s calendar could show all scheduled meetings, memos and anniversaries, as well as create a detailed meeting with an alarm prior to the event.

Like all recent Nokia smartphones, the E75 support high-speed downlink packet access (3.5 G), Wi-Fi, FM radio, as well as GPs for navigation and Bluetooth A2DP, which allows high-fidelity audio to be streamed from one Bluetooth device to another.

Multimedia functions

The E75 runs on an advanced Symbian S60 3rd edition v 9.3 (with feature pack 2) operating system, which allows one to download thousands of applications from third party developers.

The OS allows one to also personalize the whole device from home screen to the menu structure.

For those who want to put business matters aside for a while, the E75 offers all basic multimedia functions, including music and video player.

The phone has a 3.2 mega pixel camera that performs decently as long as there’s plenty of light around. In video record mode, the camera could support a VGA resolution at 30fps.

With its ability to share content immediately either through MMs or social networking sites (Nokia’s Ovishare, Flicker, etc.) this work-oriented device is also ready to play anytime as well.

Readily Connect

Since the E75 comes bundled with a $Gb MicroSD card, owners need not worry about running out of storage space.

Most headset and earphones should readily connect to the E75 thanks to its 3.5 mm audio jack (as opposed to the much smaller 2.5 mm jack that still requires adaptors)

Interestingly, the E75 is also the first E-series device to support Nokia’s gaming platform, N-Gage (one could download trial versions or buy the actual game).

Priced upwards of $400, the E75 is an interesting preposition. As a business phone, the E75 does well thanks to the hidden keyboard and its ability to handle POP3, IMAP, and exchange e-mail, and has a wizard that can set up most accounts with a minimum of user input.

Its mostly stainless steel finishing also helps in giving the E75 a nice classy expensive feel and weight.
